John A. Kennedy born in 1916 in Magog, Quebec Canada son of Scottish immigrants. He moved to the US as a child. He was educated in New England schools and attended Syracuse University before World War II interrupted his education. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and later completed his education in funeral service in Boston.
He purchased the Merrill Funeral Home in Hudson in 1952 from Edward Merrill and the Fowler Funeral Home in Maynard in 1955 from Guyer Fowler. He operated both funeral establishments until 1971 when he sold the Merrill business and in 1981 sold the Fowler-Kennedy Funeral Home to his son-in-law John E. Erb. He was a longtime member of State and National Funeral Director Associations.
Always active in the communities he served, over the years he was master of his Masonic Lodge, Sunday School Superintendent and treasurer of his church, and member of the American Legion, Maynard Country Club, Rotary Club and Elks Lodge. He was also past president of the Assabet Savings Bank before it merged to become Middlesex Savings Bank. He served the bank as real-estate appraiser for several years.
He was married to Claire "Peg" (Pritchard) Kennedy in 1940 and they raised their two daughters in Maynard where they both still live. After retiring he spent winters in Naples, Florida and the remainder of the year in his retirement home in Stow, MA. He died in 1997 and is buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Maynard in the town that meant so much to him during his life.
